What clay or sculpting mediums are there?
With all the different sculpting mediums available, we’ve all thought of making something with our own hands. But the choices seem to be daunting when one tries to start out. Experimenting with different sculpting mediums can help you with your creative process and you might find that you’d prefer one medium or a mixed media approach! In the interest of experimenting and trying out different sculpting mediums I have made this article to show the things that I have used in some way or the other.
Just to start out I’d like to mention that there are different categories in clay (not including stone and wood carving). I’ll be touching all the categories briefly. (Someday I’ll come out with more articles on each category of clay if I can). Some of the clay mediums are:
- Natural clay: terracotta, stoneware, porcelain, etc
- Polymer clay: Sculpey, Premo, Fimo, etc
- Epoxy based clay: Magic Sculpt, Apoxie Sculpt, etc
- Oil based clay: Plasticine, Chavant, Monster Clay, etc
- Automotive Clay: Staedtler Mars, Tools Int’l, etc
- Waxes
- DIY clay: Cold Porcelain, Paperclay, Paper Mache, Marshmallow fondant, modelling chocolate
- Mixed Media
In each blog post, I will try to give a brief description of each category of sculpting mediums available. I’ll show, with examples, what could possible be creatively made with these mediums. Some of the examples are my own and some are the works from masters out there in the world currently.
